2014 Summer Blockbusters: X-Men Days of Future Past

Marvel has officially taken summer blockbusters to a whole new level this year, with the release of Captain America: Winter Soldier, The Amazing SpiderMan 2 both did extremely well, dominating there opening weekend. Now with X-Men Days of Future Past and upcoming Rise of the Guardians destine to follow this path.

I wasn’t thrilled when I heard that they were going to combine the characters from the original X-Men trilogy with their younger selves from the X-Men First Class series. I thought that both series are good on its own and combined may be a disaster. I’m not a big fan of Marvel but when I saw the First Class movie I fell in love with it, I’m a sucker for a good origin story. Days of Future Past story is partially set in an alternate future where surviving mutants have been penned in concentration camps, giant robot called Sentinels patrol America, and most of the X-Men have been hunted and killed. In the present day, the X-Men are forced to stop a key event from unfolding in order to keep that future from occurring. They must change the past to save their future. The movie takes place in time different time zones, in the 1970’s(First Class) and 2018(where the film picks up with its original X-Men cast).

Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hault join forces with Patrick Steward, Ian McKellan, Hugh Jackson, Anna Pacquin  and Hally Berry who all will be reprising their iconic roles. For those who are fan of the original X-Men trilogy don’t get too excited to see the cast back together. The original trilogy will appear mostly in scenes depicting the dystopian future so time commitments for the actors are minimal.

Bryan Singer is on as director and producer, he is also the director of the original X-Men trilogy. Michael Vaughn who director X-Men First Class was previously on to director Days of Future Past but he lost out to Singer. Vaughn is on only as a producer.

With a budget around $220 million its the second most expensive film made by20th Century Fox, the first was Avatar so it has big shoes to fill. The many trailers that’s been released did not disappoint and with a budget like that it can’t afford to. The Sentinels are high anticipation in the X-Men series, fans had been waiting for over a decade to see them and in the trailer they look spectacular and they are all CGI.

Fan of X-Men can look forward to a X-Men Origin: Mystique, X-Men Origin: Deadpool and a X-Men 4 movies in the future. They are just under development and I hope that they don’t get shutdown like the Magneto movie which I would have love to see.

X-Men Days of Future Past is going to be full of action, explosion and amazing CGI and effect. If your a fan or not you should definitely see this movie.

Are you excited to see it, let me know your thoughts by commenting.

-Have a good one.

  1. Great article. I love X-Men, all the way back to the 90′s cartoon series on Fox. I feel like since X-Men: First Class, Fox is starting to get this franchise and property back on it’s feet. I’m sure you’ll be happy to know that Channing Tatum is officially Gambit. It’s confirmed. I’m very excited for what’s to come for this property and for Days of Future Past.

  2. Ya know…I saw this movie and loved it but never got around to reviewing it on my site. I really thought it did an excellent job juggling characters and selling the time travel storyline. Overall it might be the best X-Men to date! Unfortunately, after I saw it I got too busy to let everyone know how MUCH I enjoyed it and it got lost in the shuffle. Can’t wait for it to come out on DVD. I’ll be buying that one!
