Award Buzz: Into the Woods

into the woods

One of the movies you will hear about this award season is Into the Woods, mostly for its amazing performances and frankly that’s the only thing the movie have going for it. The movie synopsis is, a witch conspires to teach important lessons to various characters of popular children’s stories including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel with the tagline, be careful what you wish for.

Directed by Rob Marshall commonly know for his works on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,  Marshall put a dark twist on a beloved Broadway classic.  Into the Woods stars Anna Kendrick, James Corden, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, and the amazing Meryl Streel. From the list of actors cast in the movie there is no wonder why Oscar buzz is buzzing for Meryl Streep for her supporting role, Streep already grab SAG and Globes nominations. All the cast performed exceptionally well, James Corden shown throughout,  Emily Blunt and Anna Kendrick sang beautifully, Chris Pine was just handsome and Johnny Depp was there for five minutes  -more on him later-.

Expectations were high for this movie, did the cast deliver? YES. But there is just so much a cast can do with a bad movie. The singing was good, not all the actors cast were good singers but the ones that were did well. Chris Pine is a better actor than singer his duet -Agony- was so bad it was laughable, not sure if that’s what Rob Marshall was going for. Johnny Deep song’s lyrics was perverted and uncomfortable to listen to. On the topic of Johnny Deep, this role was a typical role for him nothing stood out and his makeup and costume were amateur.  The songs however, were good for the first hour of the film, after that they were too much, too long and just bland. With that, said there was a standout song and it’s Meryl Streep’s Into the Wood. The movie wasn’t bad per se, a movie with high expectation/hype is.

Into the Woods is a perfect example of what 2014 is going to be remembered for in movies, great performances not so great movie.

Mixed, some I liked others I loathe, for instance Maleficent was one of the highest grossing films of last year but in all honesty it wasn’t a good movie, the acting was horrible, I expected better performances from Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning (both amazing actresses). I can’t name of off the top of my head that I liked. The idea of these are live-action fairy tales are awesome but the outcome sometimes (most times) isn’t. Although I’m really looking forward to see Cinderella later this year.

  1. It was a great family movie . No foul language . Comical . Enjoyed all of the acting . I gave it a good rating in telling my friends who have kids . Not a scary movie either . So , you be your judge whether or not you liked it . .
