2015 Oscar Prediction

The Academy Awards can be somewhat bias when it comes to the selection of their top category and next year’s ceremony will be no exception. 5 to 10 movies will be nominated  for best picture and over the years there’s been similarity/bias between with the genres. The top genres that is most likely to get a nomination are:

  • Bio-Pics – The Wolf of Wall Street grab a ton of nominations, but had the rug pulled from underneath them, winning not even one award at this years award. Theory of  Everything shows the same promise, or maybe Foxcatcher will be the bio-pic of the next year’s Oscars, without a doubt that Steve Carell will get a nom. for best actor and is my top pick to take home the statue come next year. Don’t forget about The Imitation Game the bio-pic of Alan Turing where Benedict Cumberbatch gave a stellar performance. This is the year of bio-pics.
  • Indie Films – Dallas Buyer Clubs made it into the history books when it became the fifth movie to win best actor and best supporting actor. Boyhood will be next year’s indie film and even if they don’t get any noms which is highly unlikely, they already broken movie record taking 12 years to make.
  • War Flick – Last year, war flicks missed out, although in previous year they find a way in the best picture category. Zero Dark Thirty (2013), War Horse (2012), The Hurt Locker which won best picture over Avatar in 2010. This year we have two to choose from, Fury and American Sniper, not only can both of these get a nom. for best picture but, David Ayer and Clint Eastwood are in the strong contenders to get a best director nomination.
  • Historical Films – based mostly slavery or human right. 12 Years a slave, which won this year, for not only best picture but for best supporting actress and best writing adapted screenplay. Over the years historical films has always find there way in the best picture category and next year will be no different with Selma, but will it finish filming in time.
  • Stunning Blockbuster/Epic – Earlier this year Gravity prove that a film can do well and win a ton of award. Interstellar shows the same promise, pleasing both movie-goers and critics alike. Gone Girl is a contender for best picture but is it too commercial for the Academy.
  • Musicals – Musicals are becoming more and more popular at the academy awards. With Chicago (2003) winning best picture and Les Miserables had multiply noms in 2013. This years musical is Into the Woods with alot of big name will it be able to continue the this trend. Too early to tell.

If a film is release late in the year it is more likely to get a nomination, regardless of the actor, director, writer and the studio. Other factor includes the content or theme of the film and major plot keyword such as “family tragedy” “race relation” etc contribute to grantee a nom.

Although the award show is months away it’s never to early to start making our predictions. Here are some of the top contenders in some of the categorys.

Question: In your opinion, what do you think makes for good comedy?
Answer: Speaking in terms of movie, an comedy needs the same things as any other film to succeed, a story, a great script, character and actors. Humor and timing are important. I have a weird sense of humor and I laugh at stuff your not suppose to so you need actors to push the line a bit and who will say/do anything to get a laugh, eg Seth McFarlane.
wpid-img-20140330-wa0000.jpg
