Fairy Tales are Forever

Do you believe in fairy tales? Well you don’t have to, with Disney’s upcoming release of some of their most famous stories in live action motion pictures, it doesn’t matter if you believe or not. 201o’s Alice in Wonderland was the movie that started it all, grossing over a $1 billion worldwide – that’s billion with a B. Over the years, many live-action fairy tales have been release some are hits and other were big misses. These are five movie you should look forward to in the near/far future:

1. Maleficent(2014)

Starting of my list is Disney’s re-tell of Sleeping Beauty, re-told from the point of view of Maleficent. It’s stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and is one of the years most anticipated movies. For more on Maleficent check out my preview 2014 Summer Blockbusters: Maleficent

2. Cinderella (2015)

We all know the story of Cinderella, but do we really? With a release date set for 13 March 2015, Cinderella is a long way coming and had a couple bumps in the road. The movie was first pitch in 2010 off the success of Alice in Wonderland. Mark Romanek signed on to be the director but was soon drop from the project due to creative differences (Romanek take on Cinderella was too dark). Kenneth Branagh quickly replaced him as director and the role of Cinderella was offered to Emma Watson but she declined. Lily James, Cate Blancett, Helen Bonham Carter, Hayley Atwell, Richard Manning and Stellan Skarsgård are all on to play some iconic roles.

3. The Beast(2016)

In development is another well known fairy tale: Beauty and the Beast. Guillermo del Toro is on to produce and direct this live action motion picture. Emma Watson is on to play Belle which is why she decline the offer to play Cinderella, which make sense, she would make a better Belle. Not much has been release on this film, by the name  it seems like the film is going to be dark, hopefully not too dark. No dates has been release as yet but how its looking I would say look for The Beast to be out in 2016.

4. Pan(2015)

2015 brings us another fairy tale Peter Pan. The movie is now in pre-production. Pan centers on how Peter Pan and the man who became Captain Hook started out as friends, with Hook working as a member of the crew on Blackbeard’s pirate ship. Blackbeard is said to be the film’s main antagonist while Hook would serve as Pan’s close ally before turning bad. Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, Amanda Seyfriend, Garrett Hedlund and Levi Miller are signed on to the project with Joe Wright directing. Pan puts a dark twist on the Peter Pan we grew up with but is it going to be a hit, it’s really hard to say at this point.

5. Tarzan(2016)

Last on my list is David Yates take on Tarzan, Yates is known for his work on the final installments in the Harry Potter series. Tarzan still in development but it looks promising with Alexander Skarsgard, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz and Margot Robbie all signed on to the project. The movie follows Tarzan years after he’s reassimilated into society, he’s asked by Queen Victoria to investigate the going-on in the Congo. Tarzan teams up with an ex-mercenary to save the Congo from a fierce warlord who controls a massive diamond mine. A Belgian soldier attempts to capture Tarzan in exchange for a random in diamonds. The plot is alright nothing stands out about it, of all the movies on my list this is my least favorite.

There it is, do these movies make you believe in fairy tale. Which ones are you excited for and comment what other fairy tale you would like to see turn into a live action motion picture?

-Blog happily ever after!

  3. Ooooh, I didn’t know about Tarzan. Sounds pretty interesting. I don’t know how I feel about another Cinderella flick, though. If the director got ditched for his take being too dark, then it sounds like the kinda movie I’d prolly *wish* was darker. We shall see, I guess.

  4. I would see ‘Cinderella’ just because Branagh is directing. I have so much respect for him. Add in that Bonham Carter is in it and I’m sold.
Pan sounds awesome as well. I like Jackman and enjoyed Mara in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.’ I’ll look forward to that one.
