2014 Summer Blockbuster: Guardians of the Galaxy

I have a confession, I’ve never seen a movie in 3D until last night and my mind was blown to pieces by Guardians of the Galaxy. Over the pass few years Marvel has been hitting us with movies from left, right and center most of them are good, others I can’t say the same about. Marvel took a risk with Guardians of the Galaxy because: 1. not a lot of people are familiar to this comic 2. it has a totally different tone and attitude from other Marvel movie.

The Guardians include: the revenge driven Drax the Destroyer, Groot -a talking tree man; Star-Lord/Peter Quill, Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives; and Gamora, the last survivor of her species. Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits-Rocket, , Groot, Gamora and the Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand-with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

The movie stars Chris Pratt as Star Lord, David Bautista as Drax, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Bradley Cooper voicing Rocket and Lee Pace as Ronan. The cast is an odd ensemble when you think of superhero movie especially an Marvel movie but on screen they had great chemistry. Director and Co-Writer James Gunn brings  a giddiness and a wondrous endless sense of why-the-hell-not humor that the cast pulled out really well. It took a good hour for Gunn to find balance between the comedy and seriousness and once he found it was pure gold. This is Gunn’s biggest blockbuster to date with a budget of $170 million and the movie box office gain double that amount and counting.

Guardian of the Galaxy has wit, energy and humor to spare and you can look forward to the sequel coming out on July 2017.

Have you seen The Guardians on action, comment below what you think of it, and if you haven’t seen it comment still.

  1. I saw it (and posted about it), and I loved it! The cast and the movie was great, but my favorite thing, and this is true for most Marvel movies right now, is the treatment of female characters. I’m so tired of sexism in media right now, and I feel like Marvel understands my frustration and responds with ass-kicking, non-romantic interest, fleshed out, and diverse women. (Yes, I know they are pushing back the Black Widow movie, but I have hope it’s still coming. Besides, she runs the show in all the movies she pops in. She guided all the action in the Avengers movie. She gets the Hulk, she saves Hawkeye, she stops the tesseract, etc. Sorry, rant.) I support Marvel movies so much right now, because they’re giving me the most relatable characters at the moment.

I was not expecting this at all. The action the comedy throughout the entire film and even surprisingly but sparingly obscenities used, wasnt it pg-13?? lol all in all good movie and I would see it again.and Chris Pratt is my new celebrity crush

  3. I am old enough to have read the original comic book waaaay back when. The references they snuck into the new version are subtle but great for us old die hards. The movie exceeded expectations and didn’t require any previous knowledge by the viewer to really enjoy. It had enough humor to cover all age groups. Definitely a 5/5 from me and my crew!

  4. Great post yo. I personally loved this film, it was just a breath of fresh air in this world of superhero films and in a lot of ways the film is more sci-fi than a standard comic book film. It is fun, quirky, consistently funny but also has moments of genuine emotion too. The main point of the film that works is the relationship between the heroes themselves, the banter, the fighting, the conversations and emotional moments too.
